My Only Friends Are Deacons

By |2025-12-03T13:42:50-08:00January 5th, 2026|Youth Ministry Ideas|0 Comments

There’s a moment in ministry when you look around and realize every relationship in your life is tied to your job.

The people you hang out with, the people you serve with, even the people you vent to are all connected to your church. At first it feels normal because ministry is a relational job. But over time, it can start to feel a little tight, like your world shrank without you noticing. That’s usually when the truth hits you.

You need friends outside of your church.

Friends who don’t see you as the youth pastor. Friends who don’t measure your worth by the size of your group or the success of last month’s event. Friends who don’t slip into “ministry talk” the moment you say hello. You need people who will sit with you in real life, not church life. (Church life is real life, but you get what I mean, right?)

People who’ll laugh with you, challenge you, and remind you you’re more than your role. Ministry works best when your identity isn’t tied to your performance, and outside friendships help anchor your heart in something healthier.

Finding those friendships takes intention, but it’s worth it. Join a hobby group. Meet someone for coffee who doesn’t go to your church. Reconnect with a friend from a past season. Give yourself permission to be Frank, not “Pastor Frank,” for a little while. The more you build relationships that aren’t wrapped up in your ministry world, the more grounded and refreshed you’ll feel.

And when you walk back into your church, you’ll show up with a fuller heart and a little more strength for the people you’re called to love.

It’s Almost Nearly 2026

By |2025-12-03T13:52:28-08:00December 29th, 2025|Youth Ministry Ideas|2 Comments

There’s something about the week after Christmas that invites reflection.

The rush slows down, the decorations sit quietly, and you finally have a minute to breathe.

It’s a good time to look back on the year and notice the things God carried you through.

The hard conversations. The small victories. The moments with students that surprised you. The volunteers who came through right when you needed them.

Ministry rarely feels slow, but when you pause, you can see how God kept moving in ways you didn’t realize at the time. As we head into a new year, hold on to that.

God’s been faithful, and He’s not done yet.

Let’s walk into the next season with open hands and hopeful hearts.

You’re a Gift to Youth Ministry

By |2025-12-03T13:48:02-08:00December 22nd, 2025|Youth Ministry Ideas|0 Comments

This week always slows me down in the best way.

I look around the ministry I serve in and think about the students who show up with open hearts, the volunteers who keep saying yes, and the families who trust us with their kids.

I’m sure in the hectic crazy of Christmas, you may have similar moments. So just in case you don’t hear it from anyone else:

I’m grateful for every one of you.

Thank you for the prayers you pray, the rides you give, the conversations you have, and the moments you show up when it would’ve been easier to stay home.

Ministry is never a one-person job.

It’s a family effort.

And I’m thankful I get to serve alongside you in the capital C church.

I hope this Christmas gives you rest, joy, and the reminder that God is still with us.

You matter more than you know.

Susan Doesn’t Want to Have Fun

By |2025-12-03T12:50:42-08:00December 15th, 2025|Youth Ministry Ideas|0 Comments

It always happens at a moment you don’t expect.

You’re chatting with a volunteer, walking through plans for the night, and they quietly admit that they really don’t enjoy the fun parts of youth ministry. Games stress them out. Loud moments drain them. Chaos feels distracting instead of energizing. At first, it can feel confusing because fun is often the front door of what we do.

It’s how students relax, how they feel safe, and how they start to trust us. But the more you sit with their honesty, the more you realize how brave it is for them to say it out loud. Every volunteer serves out of a unique wiring, and not everyone comes alive in the same moments.

Instead of trying to convince them to love dodgeball or treasure hunts, take time to understand what they are good at. Some volunteers thrive in the quiet corners of the room. They’re the ones students open up to because they do not feel pressured. Others come alive in small group discussions or one-on-one conversations. When you value the gifts they already bring, you build a stronger and healthier team. Youth ministry works best when everyone plays the role they were made for, not the role we assume they should fit.

You can still cast vision for why fun matters without making them feel wrong for not loving it.

Explain that games and laughter help build trust and lower the walls students carry. Let them see how fun sets the stage for deeper conversations. At the same time, help them find places to serve that match their personality. Maybe they greet students. Maybe they sit with the quieter kids. Maybe they help with check-in or run slides or lead a small group. When volunteers serve where they feel confident, students benefit. And when volunteers feel seen and valued, your ministry grows stronger from the inside out.

Kevin Thinks You’re Not Deep

By |2025-12-03T12:47:31-08:00December 8th, 2025|Youth Ministry Ideas|0 Comments

There are moments in ministry that catch you off guard, and a student telling you that your teaching is not deep enough is definitely one of them. It hits a little harder than you expect. Part of you wants to smile and ask them to explain the finer points of Leviticus, and part of you wants to crawl under your desk and reevaluate your entire life. The truth is usually much simpler. Students often say things like this when they want to feel challenged or when they are wrestling with something they can’t quite name. They are growing, stretching, and trying to connect what they learn with the world they live in.

Their comment is less about your sermon notes and more about their hunger for meaning.

Instead of reacting defensively, it helps to slow down and get curious. Ask what they are hoping to learn. Ask what feels thin or confusing. Ask what they wish they understood better. When you lean in and are curious, you show them you are not afraid of honest conversations. You also give yourself a chance to see the ministry through their eyes, which can be incredibly helpful. Their perspective might reveal something that has been sitting under the surface for a while.

It might also show you that you are on the right track and they are simply craving a deeper personal journey with Jesus.

Moments like this can either bruise our pride or sharpen our leadership. You get to choose which one. When a student questions your depth, it is actually an invitation to disciple them in a more personal way. It means they trust you enough to speak up. It means they are thinking about their faith. It means they are ready for a challenge.

Walk with them. Coach them. Point them to deeper practices. Ask them to read Scripture with you. Invite them into leadership conversations. And remind yourself that this is exactly the kind of honesty we hope our students develop.

And if a comment like this pushes you to grow too, even better.
