Mariners JHM Weekend in Review: Volume 2

Weekend Teaching Series: What I Wish I Knew in Junior High (week 2 of 5)

Sermon Synopsis: Holiday weekend! When the 4th of July happens on a Sunday … argh. Painful! But … we managed and ended up with a solid weekend. My “wish I knew” from junior high was about trust, and how we are constantly trust-building or trust-busting with our parents. Told some fun stories from my teen years and used a tall Jenga set as an example of trust being difficult to build and maintain but so simple to lose. Students easily resonated with the object lesson, and I felt like it really help carry the talk.

Service Length: 66 minutes

Element of Fun/Positive Environment: We introduced our students to a brand new game on Download Youth Ministry – Where’s the Ball?  simple game where students have to guess which ball is the real one from funny Photoshopped pictures of athletes playing various sports. It is SUCH a simple concept and yet … totally crushed. Kids loved the game, some were easier than others but helped them stay in a bit longer which is OK as well. As always we welcomed in new students with the Impossible Shot, and also played a fun game with no real answers called In My Opinion: Summer Edition from one of my good friends Todd Pearage. Kids played along, we had some watching live online as well, and they could put their answers in the chat. All in all solid program, made super easy by DYM. Not sure how I ever did youth ministry before them!

Music Playlist: Let Go, Lion and the Lamb

Favorite Moment: I had to “find my talk” – it wasn’t coming together super well but we have 5 services over the course of the weekend, so was able to kind refine it on the fly and felt like it was finally good by the 4th try. Hey, it happens! And it sure did this weekend.

Middle School Students and Spiritual Disciplines

By |2020-03-22T18:41:09-07:00March 31st, 2020|Teaching|0 Comments

One of my favorite things that I love about ministering to middle school-aged students is the chance we have as youth workers to push our students into new understandings and better relationships with Christ. One of the most fun and important ways I have been doing this over the past few weeks is through a series on Spiritual Disciplines. Spiritual Discipline and middle schoolers don’t often get talked about, probably because it is not only a daunting task, but it can also be somewhat heavy and stale if we are not careful. So this is how I have tried to take this topic to a whole new level for middle school students.

1) GET HANDS-ON
No one has ever said that one of the spiritual disciplines is being bored. In fact, I love that God has created us to be fun, creative beings. One way we are teaching spiritual disciplines is through heavy interaction. I would say about 50-60% of our teaching time of 25-30 minutes is hands-on. We put into practice what we are learning.

For example, we talked about Simplicity and Solitude. I know you’re thinking how can middle schoolers have fun with simplicity and solitude? Yeah, I was too, but once you get them to put these disciplines into action they have a great time with it! We took about 15 minutes with just Jesus in complete silence. You read that right—15 minutes of middle schoolers in complete silence! I explained the “why” behind the action and then we practiced being silent and listening to Christ together in the same room. Then we got up and went on a prayer walk around our entire campus for another 10-15 minutes. To see the amount of imagination and excitement these activities unleashed was awesome!

2) BE OPEN
One of the biggest ways for us to get middle schoolers to do something is for them to see us modeling what we are teaching. Be open and transparent to them about how you are putting your spiritual disciplines into practice. We accomplished this through a series of Instagram stories and short posts. I would caption what I was working on that day and ask them to DM the Student Page with what they were doing with a caption and a picture to go with it. It was fun to see how excited they were to share their journey with others!

3) DON’T OVER COMPLICATE IT
We want middle schoolers not to only understand spiritual disciplines, but to put them into practice on a daily basis, so we can’t over complicate them. We should not only teach them what spiritual disciplines are but also impart a desire in their hearts to practice them. So, we try to make spiritual disciplines easy to pull off for a middle school student. Make sure each discipline is obtainable for your group of students. This is why we make it hands-on during our meeting time, to show them that you don’t have to take a long time doing each practice as long as you are intentional with each practice.

Here is the list of Spiritual Disciplines that we have gone over as a Student Ministry:
Simplicity and Solitude
Meditation and Study
Celebration and Guidance
Submission and Service
Confession and Worship
Prayer and Fasting

Context

By |2020-03-24T09:35:15-07:00March 23rd, 2020|Teaching|0 Comments

/ˈkäntekst/
noun

  1. The circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea; in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed.

News flash: sometimes we take the Bible out of context.

It can be all too easy to take a single verse (or a fraction of one), pluck it from the other verses around it, and make it mean something in isolation that sounds really nice. But that often twists the text into something that it’s not.

As the definition above indicates, reading the Bible contextually can help us understand and assess what the Bible is really trying to say to us. So what does it look like to read the Bible in context? Here’s a simple three-step approach that many pastors and theologians find helpful:

  1. The world BEHIND the text – Look at who wrote it and who the author was writing to, and examine what was going on historically at the time it was written.
  2. The world WITHIN the text – Look at the actual words (this may require diving into some Hebrew and Greek lexicons!). Examine what the author was doing in a literary sense and what choices they made as a writer – is this a letter, a song, poetry, history, an allegory??
  3. The world IN FRONT OF the text: Think about how your own life and experiences impact how you read these verses. We all have a story – we have our own contexts that shape how we read and interpret the Bible.

One of my professors at Fuller Theological Seminary says this: “Our task is to take seriously the problem of more faithfully hearing Scripture on its own terms, both in its original context and in ours. Much of our agenda for accomplishing this adjustment will involve coming to grips with the filters we unsuspectingly and subconsciously use when we read the Bible.”

As we enter into dialogue with the Bible, we must recognize all the contexts at play if we want to truly understand and assess these words and what they mean for us. This is not as easy as just reading a few words and assigning meaning to them immediately, and it may challenge the notions you have about some very familiar texts, but I’m finding that when I engage in a contextual dialogue with the Bible, it becomes more alive and more powerful in my life than ever before.

Hey, I’m Tim! In the DYM world, I’m probably best known as “the Crowd Charades guy,” and I love it whenever someone shows me a photo of their students playing that game! DYM helped me get through my first few years of youth ministry, and I hope my resources can be that for other youth workers. More than anything, I love the community I’ve found through DYM.

I live in Nashville, Tennessee with my amazing wife, Becca. She’s a Dove Award-winning graphic designer who helps keep my DYM content looking fresh! We love to travel, listen to music, and eat good pizza that’s way too fancy for a lock-in.

I’d love to hear from you – please say hello on Twitter or Instagram: @timwildsmith

Series Arc for 5 Ways to Be Awesome: Book Study on James

By |2020-02-12T15:28:14-08:00February 13th, 2020|Mariners Youth Ministry, Teaching, Teaching/Programming|0 Comments

Here’s where we’re heading in Mariners Junior High this March. I like to map out the 5 weeks in advance to give speakers (and myself) direction for the series. This month we’re covering a chapter each week from the book of James. Going to be fun!

5 Ways to be Awesome
New JH series this March!

WEEK 1 – James 1 Be a Person of Character
In this series kickoff we’ll talk about how troubles build your character and reveal who you are. And how troubles, trials and temptations that we’ll face shape us as we follow Jesus. It would be awesome for a student to share her story facing, and she shared how she did/is trusting Jesus through it all.

WEEK 2 – James 2 Be a Person Who Serves
This weekend we’ll build on the section of James 2 where he talks about good works flowing from a life of faith. How that faith is dead without evidence of a changed life in our actions and outlook. We looked at the roadblocks of why we choose not to serve (outright selfishness was my admission) and offered students several practical ways to get involved in serving at Mariners and also outside the church walls in the community.

WEEK 3 – James 3 Be a Person Who Controls Their Mouth
Words are a powerful force for both destruction and building people up. This week we’ll look at the mouth and how words are an indicator of our heart and what the words of a follower of Jesus look like.

WEEK 4 – James 4 Be Person Who Is Humble
Humility is lacking severely in the world today, so we’ll look at how the humble person lives their life and decide if it is the way Jesus would want us to live. We’ll talk about the opposite of humility as well, and challenge students to practically walk in humility this week!

WEEK 5 – James 5 Be a Person Who Prays
What is prayer and how does it work? We pray for meals and for sick people, but does it really do anything? The books of James talks specifically about prayer and rescuing people with our prayers and with our actions. Include a clear plan of salvation and emphasize how followers of Jesus to pray earnestly out of a sincere and right heart.

Four Weeks of Programming Done For You!

By |2019-06-01T00:50:54-07:00May 31st, 2019|Help Me With..., Membership, Teaching, Teaching/Programming, Uncategorized, Youth Ministry Ideas, Youth Ministry Resources|2 Comments

Every season of Youth Ministry includes programs and events, but none is quite as busy (and, often, crazy!) as Summer. The end of a school year leads right into a new routine/rhythm of events, camps, and (hopefully somewhere in there) a week to breathe before Fall planning begins.

Often, weekly programming can falter because of the influx of tasks in your head.

We get it. We’ve been there. And we’re here to help!

On the first of the month, every month, DYM Members receive a digital delivery of new, top-of-the-line programming elements. Gold Members get a new video, game, Sidekick file, Student Leadership resource, and Mystery Item every month. That’s about $25 of free resources every month, not to mention an additional $20 Store Credit they receive every month, and the discount of 35% OFF store prices every day! (Not yet a Gold Member, try it free for 30 days–no credit card required–and you’ll get access to all of these resources, discounts, and $5 Store Credit!)

A handful of new resources can feel a little overwhelming if you’re not sure quite how to plug them into your weekly program. My Fall Programming Picks Bundle

By |2018-08-06T15:59:07-07:00August 6th, 2018|Games, Help Me With..., Teaching, Teaching/Programming, Uncategorized, Youth Ministry Ideas, Youth Ministry Resources|5 Comments

Hey friend!

I’ve done Fall planning in youth ministry for more than 20 years. Summer is over and I even managed to sneak in a few days of “staycation” – it’s time for Target “back to school” sales and Old Navy’s endless ads. I’m excited about what God did at summer camp and watched students grow, and I’m now asking God’s Spirit to guide me as I set the course for the Fall.

There’s a lot to process heading into this season—and a lot of opportunities and obstacles to be aware of. Here’s what I feel like learned over the years about heading into Fall:

Back to school means back to Jesus
Many students take off in the summer months or their schedule is just so random with vacations, sports camps and beach days that they can’t always be counted on to be a part of our youth ministry. My own kids experienced summer school, a first job and intense sports camps the past few months making for a crazy, always-running house. But going back to school is the grounding force that brings everyone back and the more formal schedule allows church to be dropped into the mix and a priority once again.

Momentum for the whole year starts in the fall
Momentum is a fickle thing, so the start of the school year with a big Fall Kickoff or Back to School bash feels like a good chance to rally students together and encourage them to make the right friends and participate in the right community. So I carry over any momentum from summer (a great camp, baptisms, etc.) and go right into a big Kickoff event and felt-need series to get everyone back in the groove. I want to launch small groups or mentoring around this time to keep the momentum rolling through Christmas to get to the New Year.

Familiar themes work great in the fall
I like to focus on some familiar themes in the Fall. They’re timeless… Honestly, I can get tired of teaching the same things every year, but they are too important to pass up – so I find a way to “reskin” these themes every year: purpose/identity, relationships and spiritual growth.

So having done this more than 20 times, I thought it might be fun to show you a plan for what the fall could look like, and wrap it up in one sweet bundle if you want to a) get a great deal and b) let me do the planning for you.

FALL KICKOFF

  • Weirdo (1-wk series)
  • T-shirt Frenzy (Sidekick file)
  • Locked Up for What (Game)

FIRST SERIES OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

  • Swipe Right (a completely revamped version of Facebook Official: a 5-wk series from me and Doug Fields)

Pair it with these games with an easy connection to a biblical truth from a purity/relationships series.

  • Maybe Baby Game
  • Ice Cream or Nail Polish
  • Who’s the Baby Daddy?
  • Birds Bees and Other Animals

SPIRITUAL GROWTH SERIES

  • Charged (2-wk series)
  • Week 1 game FAIL GUESS 2 (Sometimes we start a spiritual habit and fail. Enjoy some other failures!)
  • Fun countdown video Simon Says False Facts (The Bible is always true, when things all around us aren’t!)

A FEW ADDITIONAL TOOLS:

  • Instagram Story Icons (to help take your social media to a new level for Fall)
  • Parent Texts (Helping bridge the connection between your ministry and parents)

All of these resources have been written and created by youth pastors and trench-tested. That’s what DYM is all about! This is a great deal–$97 worth of resources for just $50–BUT if you become a yearly DYM Gold Member, you’ll get this bundle for FREE. We already call the Gold Membership ‘The Greatest Deal in the History of Youth Ministry’: (a new game, video, student leadership lesson, and mystery item on the first of the month every month, PLUS monthly store credit and DAILY discounts) but adding an additional $97 of free resources? That’s just too good to pass up! Click here to find out more about becoming a Gold Member.

Praying for an incredible fall!

The 4 Topics You Should Teach on Every Year at Youth Group

By |2017-11-22T14:48:05-08:00November 25th, 2017|Teaching|6 Comments

In the past I’ve blogged about the four topics every youth pastor should cover with their youth group. But then I thought – I bet there’s a ton of people who don’t know where to look for curriculum, games and program ideas on these four topics. Here are some recommendations in each of the following 4 areas from here on Download Youth Ministry:
There’s at least a place to start! Would love your comments pointing to specific ones that have worked for you!

My Favorite Things: 12-Weeks of DYM Resources in One Bundle

By |2017-11-16T08:40:09-08:00November 16th, 2017|Leadership, Teaching, Teaching/Programming, Youth Ministry Resources|0 Comments

One of the most difficult choices I make as a youth pastor is the direction of our ministry. The sermons, the games, the events… it’s a huge job. Have you ever thought “It would be so fun to have someone help me in that process!” If you’ve ever felt like this, let me be that partner for you. Let me help you get into my mind and how I put together series in our ministry.
I put together a bundle of resources from the DYM Store to help you with your next 12 weeks of sermons, games, a monthly event, and leader training. Everything you need for the next season of ministry programs!
Now I am not saying that I know it all, but service (and series) programming is one of my favorite things to do. There’s just something about having a blank calendar in front of you and being able to fill it with intentionality and series arcs so you can take your students on a spiritual journey with the hope that they grow closer and closer to Jesus.
Everything we do in our ministry planning is intentional… as I’m sure it is for you, too. We want to make sure that wherever we are going 1) God is there and we want to follow His direction and 2) our students will actually enjoy going through it.
Every year our team get together and prays through where we will go in the coming year and what comes out of that time together is a fully planned out, week-by-week scheduled program.
In our ministry, we follow this pattern when it comes to sermon series:
  • Topical
  • Jesus
  • Book Study
We feel that through this rotation you are able to cover a lot of Scripture, encourage students in different areas of their faith and challenge them to follow Jesus more closely. We also try to match the games with something that is somewhat related to the topic of the night. (This does not work all of the time and if it doesn’t, a fun, funny game could get the same results.) We always say in our meetings, “Fun breaks down walls” and it could be the thing that opens up a student to the Holy Spirit.
If I were to choose the next 12 weeks of ministry programming, straight from the DYM store, this is what I would choose.* (Note: this isn’t my next 12 weeks because I’m recommending resources I have used and loved.)
HOW TO RUIN YOUR LIFE
  • This series is by far one of the best series we have done in the last few years. Not only is it a great and unique take on topics (by giving opposite advice), but each topic was on point for what our students needed to hear. This series hits wisdom on dealing with your cell phone, friendships, and relationships… our students were talking about it every week on social media. (I can usually tell when a message hits hard when students take to social media…)

GAME: Cell Phone Shoot Out – Truth or Dare:

  • For whatever reason, our students are WAY into Jimmy Fallon-type games. They love when just a few students are up-front playing an entertaining game and they can just sit back and watch others make a fool of themselves. That is why Cell Phone Shoot Out is always a hit! This one is great when it comes to a friendship series (or you can even pit a BF and GF against each other.)

LEADER TRAINING: The Power of Encouraging Words

  • One of my favorite times of any season is being able to get together with our leaders and do some training. This video teaching is one of the most important we can do. The truth is we don’t know what voices our students are hearing to and allowing to sink into their lives. What we as leaders can use (for free!) are our encouraging words. Helping your leaders know their words are powerful in students lives is priceless.

MONTH 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

SERIES: THAT’S WHAT HE SAID

  • After a very topical and fun series, challenging students in their everyday lives, I’d suggest jumping into a series that takes a deeper look into Jesus’ teaching. I would even encourage students to invite their friends–this series is a great introduction to the life and ministry of Jesus.

GAME: What Would You Do For A Klondike Bar?

  • Bring up one, two or more participants who are willing to do whatever it takes to get a delicious treat. It could be anything from doing 10 push-ups to drinking clam juice to dancing with no music for 30 seconds. (You’ll need a few additional supplies, including Klondike bars, of course.) The game includes eight rounds (of video) which and the winner gets a free Klondike bar. It is amazing what students will do for free stuff. It was hilarious to watch.

EVENT: Extreme Bingo

  • Who doesn’t love bingo? Well, playing extreme bingo is even better! I can promise you one thing for sure: your students will never be more frustrated with you… and it’s a great thing. Using the BOXES tool in the DYM Games App, you can create “Boxes of Doom”: certain tasks, punishments, or “everyone is out” type consequences if they happen when a specific number that is called. Our students loved it, yelled at me, and completed the tasks. It always kept them on their toes and was by far one of the best games we have ever played.

MONTH 3 HIGHLIGHTS:

SERIES: ROMANS IN 5

•  In a world where students are Biblically illiterate, I think we ought to make it a priority to teach students the importance of scripture. This series is great because the outlines are just that: outlines. They are not manuscripts, but instead some main points to help you dive into Scripture yourself and then help your students understand it as well.

GAME: Impossibler 4 Corners:

• The game prompts students to move around the room to the corners marked A, B, C, or D. When the question is presented, students must move to a respective corner,  but here’s the catch: they’re trying to get the answer WRONG. Whatever corner answers correctly is out. If you want to add even more fun and twists, add a dodgeball element to it. As students are switching corners, have leaders play dodgeball. If a student gets hit by the ball, they are out!

• Reading The Bible With Students: What better way to train your leaders or small group leaders as we go through a book of the Bible than to help your leaders learn how to read their Bibles more effectively with students. This was by far one of the best and most practical trainings we have done. We have had more feedback on this training than any other.
Well, there you have it! Just a little look in to how I would put together 12 full weeks of programming and training within my own ministry. I hope it is helpful to you and your ministry. Thank you for letting me partner with you!
