One of the hardest lessons youth pastors learn is that saying yes feels spiritual, but it can quietly drain your soul. We say yes because we care. We say yes because we don’t want to disappoint anyone. We say yes because ministry needs feel endless and important. But every yes comes with a cost. Every time you say yes to one more meeting, one more event, or one more expectation, you’re also saying no to something else. Sometimes that something else is rest. Sometimes it’s your family. Sometimes it’s your own walk with God.
Boundaries aren’t selfish. They’re biblical. Jesus didn’t heal every person or meet every need in every town. He withdrew. He rested. He prayed. He chose His yeses carefully. When we ignore that example, we end up exhausted and resentful, even while doing good work. A thoughtful no creates space for better ministry. It protects your emotional and spiritual health and helps you show up fully where it matters most.
Choosing your yeses means slowing down long enough to ask what God is actually calling you to in this season. Not every opportunity is an assignment. Not every request needs an immediate answer. When you guard your time and energy, you’re not failing your ministry. You’re sustaining it. And that’s a gift to everyone you serve.

Saying yes without boundaries quietly drains focus and results. I see the same pattern even in small choices, like picking mathplayground over other tasks to stay mentally fresh.
Really thoughtful article, it hits hard how saying yes to everything can actually take away from what matters most. In my free time, I try to balance things out a bit, and even something simple like playing FNF Game helps me relax and reset. It’s honestly a fun little way to unwind after a busy day.
