Things To Know About Making Changes To Your Program

By |2016-12-12T08:47:34-08:00December 12th, 2016|Leadership, Teaching/Programming|1 Comment

The midweek.

The weekend service.

The large group.

It’s the never ending, never full beast that requires a ton of time and attention from you. Whether it’s weekly, monthly or every once in a while, there is ALWAYS a program to be planned and executed. For many, I know it is to me, this is the front door to the ministry in which you lead. It is the first experience many of your students will see when it comes to your church. It’s here were many students will be exposed to the Gospel and will see what Jesus can do in their lives.

There are so many different ways, thoughts, strategies, plans on how to reach students with the large group programming. We are not claiming to know it all, but we do know some. I know if you have a evangelistic heart, your desire to see the students who call your church “home” to be challenge by god’s word, but also have it be a place where students who are far from God can come near to God, then you know that the large group setting is a huge deal.

Figuring out how your look, feel and experience for your midweek/weekend service is hugely important. When I came into my role here one of the first things I looked at and began to evaluate was our large group gathering. There were some things that needed to change.

Change is tough. People love the old way. Students like the things they used to do and change sometimes is not very popular. But in order to make the program fit under your new vision, you will have to change things.

Want to make a change in your ministry? Get ready! There is a ton of things that come a long with changing something in your ministry, some great things and some challenging things.

It’s an uphill battle.

If there is a certain culture or thing that has been going on in your ministry and you want to change it, know that it is going to be an uphill battle. Programs can be easy to kill but a culture dies slow and fights hard. People get comfortable with status quo and change ruffles feathers. Just know it will be a fight.

Just because you are passionate doesn’t mean others will be.

There have been things in life where I get really excited about certain things and when I tell others they are not nearly as excited, as I want them to be. If you want to lead a shift, you need to get others passionate about your version and start to help them see it like you do. You have to be a passionate leader who lays clear vision so others can effectively see the direction you want them to go.

You have to a broken record.

Some of the greatest advice I have ever heard when it comes to casting a vision for change was: “When you start tot feel like a broken record because you repeat the vision over and over is probably the moment when your team is just now beginning to process the vision in general.” We have to be willing to be vocal and be consistent at it. A culture shift will take time.

We can’t change people.

Only Jesus can. If we feel God is leading our ministry one way and we are seeking after Him and wanting to do what we feel he is calling us to do, the best first step is prayer. Pray for clear vision. Pray for clear communication. Pray for your team and their hearts. Pray for your ministry and your student’s hearts. If it is where God wants you to go He will begin to change the hearts of the people. Warning: this could take time.

It’s worth it.

The uphill battle, the vision casting, sounding like a broken record, the hard work, the sacrifice, the constant conversations, the struggles, the fights, the hard conversations, the yelling, the praying, the struggle is all worth it if it is going to produce better disciples of Jesus in the end.

Give It Away, Give It All Away

By |2016-11-27T17:04:49-08:00November 28th, 2016|Leadership, Teaching/Programming, Uncategorized, Volunteers, Youth Pastor Life|3 Comments

I posted a tweet the other day and it just got me thinking even more and more about it. Here it is to give you some context:

“When students post how God is moving in their lives & mention your leaders, not you… rejoice. It’s a good thing, you’re letting them lead.”

It just got me thinking as leaders of a ministry, we sometimes get caught in the trap of thinking in which we need to be the ones in the lime light. We are the ones in which students need to post about. We need to be the ones in all the photos of “favorite people” at SHIFT (enter your own ministry name there). Someone posted a picture the other day with one of our leaders saying, “This person has shown me more about God and has helped me grow more than anyone at SHIFT” and my first reaction was…

“Really? I’m the one who teaches every week.”

Then I immediately felt convicted and realized I am actually doing what I want to be doing. I want to give away everything. I know I cannot effectively minister to everyone that shows up on a Wednesday. I know I need more and more caring adults pouring into the lives of students. When they do that, our ministry becomes more and more attractive because of the relationships formed. When students don’t post about us but about leader, rejoice, it means you are letting them lead.

Here is just a quick list of things I want to give away more and more and maybe you should work on this too:

  • Time with students. I want to really pour into my small group guys and allow leaders to go and invest in more students. When we do this, it makes our big group feel small.
  • Give away control of services. This year we have 4 weeks called You Own The Night where students take over the service by our most pulled from high schools and they do everything. They plan it, teach it, organize the event and more. Not only that, we have a few Leaders Own The Night giving the night over to our leaders where they will teach on what they feel god has laid on their hearts.
  • Campus ministry. I could make a full-time job of campus ministry with how much stuff goes on in schools. I want to give away leadership and ownership to our student leadership team and encourage them to own taking up outreach on their own campuses. They know way more students than I do.
  • Give away ideas. I know I have good ideas. But not all my ideas are the best ideas. I want to work on in planing to allow the “best idea win” and collaborate more than I ever have with my team, with our leaders and with our students to come up with the best ideas to reach more students.
  • Give away titles. I learned this from Doug Fields and Josh Griffin. Give away your title. Your leaders are pastors. You might be the paid pastor, but give away your title and allow your leaders to be pastors to the students in which they are in relationship with. Let them do what you do.
  • Decisions and baptisms. I cannot wait for the day in which no students ask me to baptize them, but they ask the leaders who are involved in their lives to baptize them instead. That is how I know I am being a great leader.

These are just a few off the top of my head but I can tell you I will continue to work on this list of things to give away so I can be a more and more effective leader. What would you add?

Perfect Video Illustration for Running from Evil

By |2016-11-22T10:29:18-08:00November 22nd, 2016|Teaching/Programming|0 Comments

In my Every 7 Minutes Workshop at the Youth Specialties National Youth Worker’s Convention last week I mentioned how I’m always “collecting and scavenging” for ways to make my talks more engaging. If I knew I was taking about running from evil in the weeks ahead, this sure is a video I would use to keep students engaged and make my point!

GUEST POST: Living Water Resource

By |2016-11-02T05:47:11-07:00November 5th, 2016|Teaching/Programming|0 Comments

GUEST POST by Jake King

The resource Living Water was inspired from water balloons, yes water balloons. I planned on having a crazy night near the end of summer full of water games. A couple months before this night, I was reading my devotions and this passage just hit me in the face like a water balloon. I was reading from John 7, and in verses 37-39 something really stood out to me. We are all familiar with Jesus inviting all those who are thirsty to come to him, it’s even in some worship songs. But then Jesus talks about how the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow from the hearts of those that come to Jesus.

Jesus is living water, and satisfies all that come to Him. But when we come to Jesus, we are then commissioned to be a river of living water to others. When others encounter us, they should be directed to the source of Living Water. What made this passage even better for me was learning more about the context of the Scriptures that Jesus was talking about.

In the Old Testament, with the Feast of Booths, the people remembered their wilderness journeys and the times that the people were so thirsty that Moses had to give them water from a rock. In this festival a person would carry water from this pool and take it to the Temple, pouring it out to remember when God provided. When they would do this they would chant something like “come you who are thirsty, come to the waters and drink from the wells of salvation.” Jesus was showing that he was the fulfillment of this festival! Those are the kind of awesome Old and New Testament connections I love.

So what started as planning crazy youth group games that involved water (knowing that I would speak about Jesus as Living Water), led to a deeper understanding of the Scripture for me, and thus for my youth group. Through the planning of the games, I also came up with a twist on kickball. Imagine kickball with the base (or bases, depending on your group and how you want to play), and the only way to get out is by being hit by water balloons.

We had a blast playing all of our water games and the students especially loved the Water Balloon Baby Pool Kickball, and cannot wait to play again. But after all the fun and games, after all the water, we sat and learned together. We learned about how Jesus is Living Water and how he commissions us to be rivers of living water to others.

So check out the resource right here on DYM – it even includes instructions for the kickball game!

By |2016-11-02T05:40:12-07:00November 3rd, 2016|Teaching/Programming|0 Comments

didtheypumpkinspiceit_preview0

I have access to all of the searches people do on the DYM site – and there are some hilarious ones in there. In fact, first off it would be good to mention that our search on the site is getting a major overhaul and in the next few weeks it isn’t working perfectly. We’re working on it, and in the meantime enjoy some of what you’re searching for!

#1 search term: ELECTION and #2 search term: TRUMP

You can see all of our voting/election resources in this subcategory here, but specifically we would recommend the Ultimate Campaign Slogan Quiz or Trump or Animal 2.

#3 search term: THANKFUL

There’s a bunch of Thanksgiving-themed games, sermons and worship nights on this page, but this Pumpkin Spice game is already far and away the best-seller of the month!

#4 search term: VIDEO TRAINING

We’ve got TONS of video training, including some discount bundles and great youth ministry thinkers and teachers. Train your volunteers the easy way and with some super content.

So that’s some of what you’re searching for! Stay tuned for more installments in the future!
