Been thinking about friendship a lot lately.

“Friendship” is an interesting term. Ask ten people for their definition and you’ll most likely struggle for a common one.

Friendship certainly means different things to different people.

In the past week I’ve seen (well, actually experienced) different friendship responses to some big decisions I’ve made. Some were warm and comforting, others cold and protective.

What I often fail to remember about friendship is the ease at which friends are capable of moving from affection to self-protection. Geesh…it can happen so fast.

  • Selfishness rules.
  • Opportunity wins.
  • Promises fade.
  • Principles weaken.
  • Motives revealed.

Thankfully, not all friendships are veneer. Understanding is a gift and loyalty is life-giving. The genuine depth of friendship warms the soul.

“A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” Proverbs 17:17

Question: what’s your definition of friendship?
