The sacred cow. My favorite thing to have for dinner.

Don’t get me wrong; I love a good youth ministry tradition. That annual guys trip up to the mountains is tough to give up. That mission trip to the same place, even the location of camp or that one night we always do at winter retreat, I love them – I really do.

And while I love traditions and markers we return to every year, I can’t help but think they’re holding me back sometimes. So I have one rule when we start to talk about the calendar.

NOTHING IS SACRED

We cut things that are past their prime we’ve help on to for too long. We cut things that are good but not great. We cut things we love that aren’t working. We cut things that are working hoping to find a newer, even more effective events, activities and curriculum.

What is a youth ministry sacred cow on your calendar? Is it time to give it a boost or give it the boot?
