Youth Ministry in the Summer!

By |2024-06-17T11:52:14-07:00June 17th, 2024|Youth Ministry Ideas|20 Comments

What do you do in the summer?

Summer is a wild time! Student ministry aside, families take vacations, kids attend all types of summer camps, and who knows what Summer sports are happening! When it comes to work and the regular, you will more than likely feel a little disrupted!

What’s your plan for the summer?

Experiment

Maybe you have fewer students around. It’s a great time to try things out! If you want to change up your programming schedule or a new teaching method, it could be a great time to try it out!

See if it works with a few or during the summer season, and then you’ll know if it’s good to try in the fall!

Take a break

Maybe it’s a good time to take a week or two off! If you’re going on a trip and taking half of your group, consider having the group take a break.

You’ll want to clear this with leadership first, but it may be a good time to try it out if it’s not your normal. Make sure you communicate to everyone that a break is happening!

Or maybe you can take a longer break! Maybe August is a great month to let families and students recover from the summer and get back into the glove before the youth group starts back!

Have some fun

If your group is not normally one to play games or have a fun outing, summer is a great time to see if that might be something you can add to your group!

It can be as easy as meeting up at a coffee shop or having a board game night or as complicated as arranging a trip to a nearby amusement park or planning a giant scavenger hunt!

Summer is a time when the sun is expected, so if you’ve been looking to experiment, go crazy!

Keep it going

Maybe all the churches in your area decide to lay off for the summer. They all take breaks, and your church is the only one around that keeps the regularly scheduled programming. Maybe that’s the best thing for you and your ministry! The rhythm can help students look forward to the summer break when they don’t go to school and see their friends.

If you go this route, just make sure to still take some time for a personal vacation. It’s really important to rest and recover during the summer months!

What do YOU do?

Is there anything on this list that I missed that you like to do during the summer? I would love to hear it! Sound off below in the comments!

Level Up Your Games in Your Service

By |2022-09-15T06:48:49-07:00September 15th, 2022|Games|15 Comments

In this power packed vlog from Mississippi youth pastor and DYM Author James Howard, we hear three ways to Level Up Your Games in Your Service. Check it out below!

Here’s a quick overview of what he covers, but watch for a deeper dive into each of these points:

  1. Find a Game that isn’t Lame.
  • Look for games that interesting, exciting, and/or engaging for the age level you are working with
  • Find High Quality Games
  • Pay attention to the ease of gameplay
  1. Execute the Game Well
  • Have it prepped well before the program
  • Do a test run
  • Get a competent, energetic, and engaging host
  1. Kill it Before it Dies. Signs of Game Death:
  • Low room engagement
  • Crowd confusion
  • Host is giving up

Got any tips you would add? Put them in the comments below!

James has been a youth pastor for over 13 years! He’s currently serving students at a multi-ethnic church in southern Mississippi. He loves creating games and videos to help students have fun, because fun is such a great way to break down any walls they might have up – hopefully allowing them to be open to the Gospel!

5 Tips For Hosting Next-Level Camp Games

By |2018-06-12T06:18:00-07:00June 12th, 2018|Uncategorized|1 Comment

by Nick Clason

Not too long ago, my wife and I were driving home from church. If you’re in Student Ministry, you know how it goes… because we didn’t have to be at church at the same time, we were driving home in separate cars, talking to each other on the phone. She asked me, “Why do you have those students running games?” and my answer wasn’t very well thought out.

…Well, they’re available to do it.

…I had to do the baptism in big church.

…I don’t really know…

She went on to say, “Today was dead, they brought no energy, and none of the girls in my small group had any desire to play. It was a fun game, but the hosts really didn’t do it justice.”

Which got me to thinking… Games are more important than we often give them credit for, so how can I set-up the hosts to win?

And, if Camp is the most important event of our summer, those games need to be next-level. How can I ramp up our summer camp game hosting skills?

Here are 5 simple but practical tips for next level summer games:

1) BRING THE ENERGY!

The crowd will never out-pace the energy of the host. So it up to you—up-front stage presence to set the tone for that piece of the program and encourage the crowd to follow your lead!

Think about it. Have you ever been to a graduation or school assembly where the speaker took his time getting up, fixed the microphone, cleared his throat, took out his notes and then started talking? That long-pause can feel never-ending to the audience!

And that’s not going to work at summer camp!  You don’t have to be phony, just be excited… which I’m sure you already are.

Be energetic!

Be articulate!

And for crying out loud, know the rules of the game! (More on that in a minute)

2) ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING AT STAKE.

This is, perhaps, my favorite item on this list.

At the summer camp that I am the founder and director of, we break the students into teams and then compete with one another throughout the week. We’ve found that putting Team Points on the line really ups the ante when it comes to student participation.

The winning team usually gets a free t-shirt or to be first in line at dinner on the last night, but if there are points to be earned or lost, students will do anything—even crazy, ridiculous things—to make sure their team stays in the running for that number one spot.

When it comes to games, make sure there’s something at stake! A prize to be won or reward to be lost…some incredible or terrible consequence that makes students want to participate!

PRO-TIP: If you have a team of apathetic, freshman boys who want to earn zero points because they think they’re too cool to participate, then award them points for simply being in the room, and their plan backfires. Win-win!

3) HAVE CHEMISTRY WITH YOUR CO-HOST.

If you’re running games with a co-host, be sure to choose someone you have chemistry with. (And definitely make sure you’re not both saying the same thing, or talking over each other.)

I’ve heard it said…
Choose one person to be the Play-by-play (the person who drives the game forward)
Choose one person to be the Color Commentator (the person who adds comments and humor)

Know your role.

Stay in your lane.

And host with someone you have chemistry.

4) USE DYM STUFF.

Don’t feel the pressure to create 100% of your programming from scratch! Lean into the great resources that are out there. Half the battle is running the game with energy and excitement, so let the brilliance of youth workers from around the country do the other half (the content) for you!

If you’re running stage games, the absolute best way I’ve ever found to select your contestants is using Pick Me (People Picker) in the DYM Games App.

Use your registration list to pre-populate the names.* Students can watch as their names scroll by on the screen—cheering for themselves and other team members as they wait to see who’s chosen to play. Not every teenager is thrilled when his/her name is selected, but like the alien toys in Toy Story they know, “The screen has spoken, you must go!”

That’s not all the DYMGames App can do for your camp program:

  • If you are keeping a running tally of points, use the Scoreboard builder to show who’s in the lead.
  • Poser is always a great way to warm up the crowd.
  • Emoji Hunt is fun (if you haven’t taken away your student’s phones.)

You can also use some of the hundreds of games that are in the DYM Store.

Some that have crushed in the past in my context are:

One game that I always turn to as a “back-pocket” game, is Bring Me! Get it for FREE in the DYM Store this week!

PRO TIP: I found this out the hard way, but if you have your student’s name in an excel spreadsheet, simply copy and paste an entire row into People Picker and Voila! You’re done! You don’t have to painstakingly and manually enter each individual name.

5) BE PREPARED.

And finally, nothing can derail you faster than being unprepared.

  • Always know how you’re going to handle a tie (Rock, Paper, Scissors is tried and true.)
  • Always know the last slide (or better yet, the 2nd-to-last slide, so you can have a tie-breaker question.)
  • If you download games from DYM, don’t just assume that you’re gonna know how to play them. (Yes, the game is “already done for you.” but you’re responsible to help your students understand how to play…so you should make sure you understand it first!)
  • Think through how you’re going to play (Where will people stand, how long will things take, etc.)
  • Determine the rules and gameplay. (Don’t wing it!)

Give more thought to the game than just the 10 seconds as you’re walking up on stage.

** BONUS TIP ** LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD.

This tip requires you to be quick on your feet… so approach with caution!

As a game is being played, if you can tell one contestant or team is running away with it (the score is 7-0 with two questions to go), try your best to shift things to a point where it will be decided at the last second or on the last question.

You’re trying to avoid the entire audience knowing the outcome of the game and losing interest. You’re also trying to keep the underdogs from giving up too soon.

One common tactic is to make a question worth 2 (or 10 or 100!), immediately bringing a team back to the equal playing field, if they answer correctly.

If you’re playing boys vs. girls dodgeball, make the boys play on their knees and throw with their left hand. Or add 5 or 6 leaders to the girl’s side.

You can also try flipping the rules at the last minute! We were playing Poser at our Winter Retreat, and to even the playing field, we switched things up. Instead of being eliminated for matching the screen, the last few rounds eliminated those who were not matching it.

Then, once you widdle-down contestants, if you have 5 people remaining, and 5 poses in the game, assign each person a pose, and the person matching the pose is the winner! (Or, if you have a pro at the computer, he/she can add or remove poses to match your remaining number of players.)

I hope these tips help to make your camp games even more epic! I’d love to see pictures and hear stories from your summer programming. You can find me on Twitter @nickclason or Instagram: @clasonnick.

DYM Games – Custom Title Graphics

By |2017-05-01T17:55:23-07:00May 2nd, 2017|Games, Youth Ministry Resources|1 Comment

In DYM Games 1.6 we’ve introduced a brand new feature that you’ve been asking for — the ability to add in your own title graphics. Now “Boxes” doesn’t have to be “Boxes”, but can be the “Random Picker of Students”. “Wheel of Destiny” can be “Spin that Wheel of Disgusting Drink Concoctions”. “Pixelate” can be “Kim Kardashian or Kim Jung Un”. “Trivia” can be “Four-Corners Sudden Death addition”. You decide!

To change a title graphic first you have to find or create a title graphic. You can use anything: Photoshop, Keynote, PowerPoint, images pulled from the internet, use your phone to take a picture, whatever! The important thing is that you need an image. Once you have that image, click on the “+” button next to the Title Graphic button inside any game. Add your image, Move it and scale it if you need to and you’re good to go. Now when you click on the Title Graphic button it will no longer show the name of the game (“Pixelate”), but show the graphic you put in there!

Watch this to see it in action!

There you go! Create a game of your own! And, maybe even submit it to the store!

DYM Games – Trivia

It’s that time again! We’ve worked hard to push out another HUUUGE UPDATE to DYM Games. In this version (1.6.0) we’re introducing Trivia!

Trivia

Trivia is nothing new. You can make a trivia based game in PowerPoint and ProPresenter. But, those aren’t made to do trivia. With DYM Games’ Trivia, you can create a game in seconds. You can edit that game super fast. And there are a few other bells and whistles that aren’t available in those other apps.

  • Games can have as many questions as you want. Each question can have 2-5 possible answers, one being correct.
  • Everything is designed and formatted for you. Choose a theme that works best for that game! Things just work!
  • Choose a background from our selection. Or add your own background!
  • Display the answer chosen by the contestant. Let the computer show if it’s right or wrong.

Check out this video to see Trivia in action!

Other features and improvements

  • Title Graphics are now customizable! You can now make every game your own! Find out more here.
  • New updating engine. Now you’ll know when a new version is ready for you within the app.

No longer will you need fancy tools like Photoshop (or less-fancy tools like MS Paint) to create your own amazing “guess the image” game! With Pixelate you can:
– Add your own images!
– Choose from image modes like “Blur”, “Zoom”, “Whiteout”, and of course “Pixelate”.
– Step through the intensity–making the ‘blur’ or ‘pixelate’ gradually less–as you reveal the correct answer.

What You’re Searching For: Volume 1

By |2016-11-02T05:40:12-07:00November 3rd, 2016|Teaching/Programming|0 Comments

didtheypumpkinspiceit_preview0

I have access to all of the searches people do on the DYM site – and there are some hilarious ones in there. In fact, first off it would be good to mention that our search on the site is getting a major overhaul and in the next few weeks it isn’t working perfectly. We’re working on it, and in the meantime enjoy some of what you’re searching for!

#1 search term: ELECTION and #2 search term: TRUMP

You can see all of our voting/election resources in this subcategory here, but specifically we would recommend the Ultimate Campaign Slogan Quiz or Trump or Animal 2.

#3 search term: THANKFUL

There’s a bunch of Thanksgiving-themed games, sermons and worship nights on this page, but this Pumpkin Spice game is already far and away the best-seller of the month!

#4 search term: VIDEO TRAINING

We’ve got TONS of video training, including some discount bundles and great youth ministry thinkers and teachers. Train your volunteers the easy way and with some super content.

So that’s some of what you’re searching for! Stay tuned for more installments in the future!
