Building a healthy ministry doesn’t happen in isolation. It requires teamwork! In my years of ministry I’ve worked with incredible people–people who are much more talented and gifted than I could ever dream to be. One of the reasons that I’ve been able to pursue a lot of different opportunities is because I’ve always surrounded myself with an “Abishai”. I know, you’re thinking, “Huh? Did Doug not take his meeds today?”

Every leader needs an Abishai. I realize tis not a very catchy leadership phrase, but this person is crucial to the success of a leader. You need an Abishai!

Abishai is a biblical character during David’s reign as King. I first became aware of him while reading 2 Samuel 21 (vs. 15ff). In the NLT it says, “David and his men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted…He

[Ishbi-benob] had cornered David and was about to kill him. But Abishai come to his rescue and killed the Philistine.”

Abishai was willing to do some of the dirty work, he was defensive for David, and his actions vividly displayed teamwork and loyalty. He was even loyal to the point of being willing to kill the sleeping Saul (1 Sam. 26:6-9). I love the phrase; “in the thick of battle Abishai came to the rescue.”

Do you have an Abishai in your life? Does that person know the important role they play in your life and ministry? Do you value them? Do you care deeply for that person? How do you display your value?

I think all leaders would be more effective if they had an Abishai…and, I also believe more people would rise up and be an Abishai if they knew they were valued.

What do you think? I’d love to hear your opinion.
